The Public Safety Sergeant/Shift Supervisor has primary responsibility for all administrative duties including writing and presenting crime prevention programming and assisting in the statistical analysis of campus and area crimes, ensuring a safe and secure campus environment.
During assigned shifts, a Public Safety Sergeant/Shift Supervisor must be ready, able, and always available to effectively respond to a wide variety of situations and prepare daily for upcoming events. The Sergeant/Shift Supervisor must adapt to changing conditions, laws, patrol procedures, general orders, work rules, and recent court decisions. The
Sergeant/Shift Supervisor is accountable for the well-being of the students, faculty, staff, and public who occupy the grounds and roadways of Arcadia University and to ensure the constitutional rights and guarantees of all.
During non-business hours, the Sergeant/Shift Supervisor is often the highest-ranking law enforcement official on campus and is expected to make most decisions without consulting a higher authority. Supervise and conduct crime prevention programming and explore innovative and cost-effective crime prevention training opportunities with Local, State, Federal and Private agencies, and Institutions. Marginal Functions : Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to investigate and conduct follow-up investigations for crimes including but not limited to interactionual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. From preliminary stages of investigation to progressive in-depth investigative knowledge, which is necessary to solve crimes, apprehend criminals, provide victim/witness assistance and prepare case documentation. Individual must successfully complete and implement the Public Safety Department's Training program within the allotted time. Minimum Qualifications : Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Required: Candidates with two or more years of supervisory experience, preferably in a University Campus Police or Public Safety setting. Other training and experience will be considered. Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in related fields, Act 120 certification, and/or certification from Fire, Corrections, and Law Enforcement academies. Training and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Other Requirements : Required to complete and pass a criminal background investigation, drug screen and motor vehicle check. performance level in the preservation, examination, handling, and comparative analysis of items of evidence collected in criminal investigations. Positions in this class are allocated to one of five specialties: Biology, Chemistry, Crime Scene, Digital Evidence, or Pattern Evidence.
Positions allocated to the Pattern Evidence specialty are assigned to one of the following disciplines: Documents, Firearms/Toolmarks, or Latent Prints. An important aspect of the work is serving on interdisciplinary committees within the Office of Forensic Science of the Philadelphia Police Department. Work in this class differs from the next lower level in that the employee is expected to provide basic instruction
to junior examiners and trainees and assist in the development of training materials while maintaining an active forensic caseload.
As experience is gained, employees oversee small projects within the area of specialty. Positions allocated to the Pattern Evidence specialty are assigned to one of the following disciplines: Documents, Firearms/Toolmarks, or Latent Prints. Positions allocated to the Pattern Evidence specialty are assigned to one of the following disciplines: Documents, Firearms/Toolmarks, or Latent Prints.
