global impact! Lumen operates one of the world’s largest and most deeply peered global transit networks, which helps make up the core of the Internet. This network enables Black Lotus Lab’s to uncover the activity of cyber-security threats through a feed of over 200 billion netflow sessions per day.
At the very core, our mission at Black Lotus Labs is to leverage this novel visibility to help disrupt threats, protect customers, and keep the Internet clean. One of our team's main functions is to make it easy for threat researchers to run large-scale queries on huge datasets in an effective way; without having to deal with the low-level system details. One of the ways we accomplish this
is through software engineering of solutions that fit this need.
As the senior software engineering manager for the team, you will help maintain a culture of curiosity, innovation, and engineering excellence by providing coaching and professional development opportunities for the software engineers in your team. The Main Responsibilities - Lead the team: Support the career growth, development, and retention of top software development talent. Attract new talent as opportunities to grow the team arise. Cheerlead to senior leadership and peers about the teams wins, while also able to speak candidly about failures and lessons learned. Share common burdens and external challenges the team faces with those that can help partner with the team to address them.
- Manage the projects: Plan, prioritize, and oversee the delivery of software solutions that meet the team’s objectives and align with the broader vision of Black Lotus Labs. Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to ensure alignment and integration of the team’s work, while holding the team accountable to their commitments. - Set direction: Setting overall vision and goals for the team's product roadmap, working backwards from the end outcomes (customer needs, mission impact) to ensure that development meets customer needs.
- Inspire innovation: Drive the development of novel engineering and software projects to enable Black Lotus labs analysts to identify, track, and disrupt sophisticated threat actors. Continue your own growth by pushing the boundaries of your own technical knowledge and inspire others on the team to do the same. - Foster the culture: Promote a culture of innovation, collaboration, and customer focus within the team and across Black Lotus Labs. Encourage the adoption of best practices, standards, and methodologies for software development. Provide feedback and recognition to the team members.
What We Look For in a Candidate Our ideal candidate is someone who has a strong interest in technical people leadership of software development teams. We want to find someone who is just as is passionate about having a self-organizing team as they are the technology the team builds and operates. While you are not expected to be hands deep in the production codebase, the ability to empathize with developers and understand their work is critical to the team’s success. Qualifications we expect: - 3 years or more experience as a people leader and 3 years’ experience in a technical role as a software developer or related function.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in computer science, telecommunications, business, information technology or related field - Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate and talk about complex technical subjects to audiences with a variety of different technical backgrounds and depth of knowledge. - Experience enabling teams to develop and maintain good iterative software development lifecycle practices that help hold to commitments and deliver iterative output of fixes and new features.
Desired skills exceptional candidates possess: - Experience programming and developing software solutions in Java, Scala, or Python - Experience leading teams responsible for big data software development with technologies like: Hadoop, Spark, HBase, and Redis. - Knowledge and/or prior experience in information security, or telecommunications industry What to Expect Next Based on your job application information you may be given the opportunity to complete a video interview immediately after applying.
